In South Africa many of the lighthouses are still manned. This project was documented in 1998, a time when the old traditional apprenticeship,learned under the skill of a master lighthouse keeper, was being replaced by a more formal college tuition and diploma. The lighthouse keepers below are from the old school. The project explored the romanticism surrounding the solitude of a lighthouse keeper through his lighthouse tales and experiences. These guys had many a tale to tell.
